Explanation
The scoring system for major international competitions is based on medal placements. Points progressively double between positions. The Olympic Games carry triple the point value of the World Championships. Team events (relays and patrol races) are awarded triple the points of individual competitions in order to give them greater weight in the nations ranking, but they are not included in the individual rankings.
